WHALE SOUNDS & SONGS OF THE SEA

Bienvenido to a special page.

Whale sounds and the underwater symphony of life.

Lobster chatter and . . .

Singing from the great whales to the tiny reef dwellers. . .

Songs of the Sea.

Humpback Whales

whale_sounds-humpback_whales Whale watching has become an important Costa Rica vacation activity, particularly along the central and southern Pacific coasts.

It is aided by the fact that it has the longest humpback whale viewing season in the world because these creatures travel here from both the southern and northern hemisphere.

When you travel Costa Rica, take some time to take a whale tour.

Humpbacks are famous for their complex whale songs.

Save the Whale to Save the Planet

FACTOID: Whales store carbon like huge trees. Restoring stocks of baleen whales (like the blue whale, gray whale, humpback whale and right whale) to pre-whaling populations would sequester the same amount of carbon as planting a new forest the size of Rocky Mountain National Park!

Click to learn more about how important whales are to saving the planet in this great study about whales and carbon sequestration.

Pilot Whales

And, speaking of that Costa Rica vacation, you might come across pilot whales. If so, they will probably be in deeper waters than humpback whales frequent.

There are long finned and short finned pilot whales in Costa Rica, though they tend to stay segregated.

whale_songs_pilot-whales These critters are the second largest toothed species of porpoise and can reach about 19 feet in length and weigh as much as 5,000 pounds.

Only the mighty Orca or Killer Whale is larger.

Should you be lucky enough to see pilot whales, you might see a pod of 20-90 or even more for they often travel and hunt using their vocal communications to keep prey like squid, other cephalopods, and small fish in the center of their pods.

Listen here to the sounds of pilot whales.

Killer Whales

There are few things in nature more fascinating than Orcas, often called Killer Whales.

Many people first meet one at Sea World. Very beautiful, very smart, very gentle.

But, in the oceans, from the Arctic to the tropics, including Costa Rica, these are the most fearsome mammalian hunters of them all. Listen to the songs of Killer Whales.

Blue Whale Songs

They're the biggest animal on earth.

Ever.

Listen to the captivating

Spiny Lobster

Lobsters have been commercially fished off Central America for more than a century.

The Costa Rica lobster fishery is small with perhaps 300 or so fishermen.

Costa Rica diving is the primary method to capture these animals along the Caribbean Coast from Cahuita south to La Amistad International Park that extends from Costa Rica into Panama.

Visit La Amistad International Park Here. Just click!

Ever wonder what lobsters talk about?

We've captured a short clip: "Hey, Mildred, hide the kids! Here they come again!" Click to hear for yourself the sounds of Spiny Lobster

Reef Dwellers

It's not only the big boys that sing, chatter, and communicate.

When you travel Costa Rica, try Costa Rica scuba diving.

As you swim over the coral, you'll probably come across beautiful

Blue Parrot Fish

They'll probably pay you little mind as they chomp away on the hard coral. Listen to the sounds of Parrot Fish eating coral, click.

Dusky Damselfish

And, certainly, if you are snorkeling or scuba diving in Costa Rica you'll come across the popular little Dusky Damselfish, a real chatterbox.

Earthquake!

But, sometimes the Songs of the Sea stop in awe and wonder at one of the greatest spectacle on the planet: earthquake.

And here is the coolest sound of them all, the magnificent sound of an underwater earthquake!
