TRAVEL TO COSTA RICA

Travel to Costa Rica? Why do so many people do it? And, how do they get around? We'll tell you here. Everything you need to know (and the only site on the web with current bus, ferry, and train schedules in one place).

When you travel to Costa Rica, there are so many ways to get around it can be a bit mind-boggling. Fortunately, you don't need to spend valuable vacation time figuring out what to do. We've put it all in one place.

But, before that, let's see why so many people travel to Costa Rica.

There's the Korean teenager, so taken with the exuberance of life here that she dreams of being a Tica. And the Canadian doctor who works summers in the far north to spend his winters rappelling endless waterfalls surrounding his home on pristine Drake Bay.

travel-to-costa-rica_beach There are oodles of reasons people come for Costa Rica vacations.

Some need to escape the rat-race and let their hair down. Others want to enjoy the many Costa Rica beaches and mountains, experience world-class fishing, or find romance and memories of a lifetime.

And, of course, some come for the year-round spring weather.

Costa Rica Budget Travel

Things have been pretty tough for most of us the last couple of years.

Costa Rica Maps

Costa Rica may be tiny but it's mighty big in adventure.

There are so many things to do and places to visit that I've collected lots of maps--one of the MOST COMPREHENSIVE you'll find--to help you decide what to do and where to go.

Maps of the parks, major highways, cities, best surfing, caribbean, gold coast, central Pacific coast, southern Pacific coast, Osa Peninsula.

Considering Air Travel to Costa Rica?

Trey Ratliffe
On a cloudless, crystal-clear day, I was introduced to the Central Valley of Costa Rica, surrounded by mountains and, yes, volcanoes.

Beyond the highest ridges lay the Pacific, its waters bathed in sunshine.

The view out of the jet’s window was breathtaking.

And just a couple of hours from Miami.

It’s easy to get to Costa Rica by air. There are many international carriers to choose from and two international airports.

Most people fly into San Jose, Costa Rica’s capitol, and use it as their launching base but if you're headed to the popular North Pacific beaches you can choose to land just miles (and 20 minutes or so) from the coast at Costa Rica's newest international airport in Liberia.

Comparison Shopping For Cheap Tickets And Hotels

I’ve flown Spirit Air, Delta, Continental, and American to get to Costa Rica. Each has given great service but I have learned that there can be big, big differences in price and travel time.

Truth is, there are dozens of different airlines flying into Costa Rica these days and fares vary widely.

Not to mention, once you get here, how do you find the best hotel prices?

Until very recently, consumers had no ability to comparison shop for the best cheap tickets or cheap hotel prices. Fortunately, that has changed with the rise of huge online aggregator companies and internet portals that can save a savvy consumer lots of money.

Getting Around

Many folks travel around this little country by modern, comfortable, convenient, and ridiculously cheap buses or taxis.

If you think that a bus is a chintzy way of getting around, think again. They're fast and a whole lot cheaper than renting a car.

People have asked for more info about buses and taxis in Costa Rica so this section was added for them--and you.

Rent A Car & Save Money

Still others rent a car from one of more than 50 companies because they want to go where they want, when they want.

TIP: Many Costa Rica car rental agencies charge about $25/day for liability insurance but you may save this by proving you have third party liability insurance. Take your auto policy and telephone number and email of your automobile insurance agent and SAVE BIG.

Want to Charter a Plane or Take a Ferry?

Maybe you're thinking about air-charters or interested in taking ferries to the wild and spectacular Osa and Nicoya Peninsulas.

There are several air charter companies, and a lot of different types of planes, to choose from.

And, if you want to take a beautiful, tropical ferry trip to spectacular unspoiled and almost deserted beaches in one of the most remote parts of Costa Rica, all it takes is a couple of bucks.

Take a Costa Rica Train to the Beach!

travel-to-costa-rica_train Most folks don't know about an extraordinary (and cheap) way to get to the beach. Over the mountains and through the woods...by train to the beach!

Yes, this is a really fun (and, yes, ridiculously cheap) way to travel.

Only in Costa Rica can you take a train to the beach!

Set aside a weekend and bring your camera for goodness sake.

Want A Costa Rica Cruise?

travel-to-costa-rica_cruise-ship Looking for a more leisurely trip to Costa Rica? Consider a cruise. With departures from a number of American cities (and some that depart from Panama, Costa Rica’s neighbor to the south), there are lots of choices.

If you wish to travel to Costa Rica by ocean-liner, you'll normally land at Limon on the Caribbean coast or dock at Puntarenas on the Pacific coast.

Should your taste go to smaller ships that don’t merely cruise to Costa Rica but actually cruise Costa Rica waters, there are great choices as well.

Like Columbus, you can discover Costa Rica by boat. . .although with a lot more luxury and comfort! See for yourself why Columbus named this gem the “rich coast.”
