SEA KAYAKING IN COSTA RICA
While on your tropical vacation, you might give a try to sea kayaking in Costa Rica.
It's a great way to spend a few hours or even a few days on your Costa Rica vacation.
Unlike whitewater kayaking, almost anybody can do it.
It's pretty easy and even most kids can enjoy it.
Have you ever thought about kayaking?
If not, it's because you haven't done it.
Once you do it along deserted tropical beaches, you'll be hooked.
With nearly 800 miles of coastline, you'll experience Costa Rica like few are able.
Don't be surprised if porpoises or even a sea turtle surfaces alongside or a flying fish suddenly flies past.
And, if you're visiting the area around Arenal Volcano, you can kayak at
Lake Arenal, click.
You Can Rent Kayaks Throughout Costa Rica
Sea kayaking in Costa Rica is easier than many non-kayakers think because these craft---made for one or two people---are remarkably stable.
Because this activity has become so popular, you'll be able to rent these little boats almost everywhere these days.
Most people rent kayaks for just a few hours while at popular tourist destinations like Puerto Viejo, Tamarindo, Jaco, Puntarenas, and Manuel Antonio but you'll find them all across the coasts of Costa Rica.
Paddling around a couple of hours is great fun, of course, but sea kayaking in Costa Rica offers other, more exotic, experiences as well.
Here are a couple of ideas to whet your appetite.
Sea Kayaking in Costa Rica: Manzanillo-Gandolfo Wildlife Refuge
Manzanillo is a tiny Caribbean village close to the Panama border.
Not a lot of people but lots of wildlife. Some 350 types of birds, manatees, crocodiles, monkeys, sloths, jaguars.
Three kinds of porpoises including a fresh-water porpoise first discovered only about 15 years ago and which lives only one place in Costa Rica!
Like sea turtles? Come between March and July and you’ll be joined by four different kinds of nesting sea turtles.
This special place even has a coral reef.
You can kayak, snorkel, and even rent diving gear. Great beaches, good hiking, horseback riding along the beach.
And, of course, you'll be close to some of the finest surfing beaches in the world. Click for
Costa Rica Caribbean surfing.
How to get there?
Go to Limon, head south along the Caribbean coast. You can drive or take a bus. Buses are comfortable, fast, and very, very cheap. Click for
Costa Rica bus schedules.
Take a Sea Kayaking Vacation Along the Nicoya Peninsula
If you are interested in a longer Costa Rica sea kayaking excursion, the place to do it is the beautiful Nicoya Peninsula. Click here and find it on our
Costa Rica maps.
The Nicoya is easily reached by car or bus (or air, of course) from either Liberia or San Jose.
Many folks go to Puntarenas and take a pretty ferry ride to the Peninsula. The ferry is fun, cheap, so click here for
Puntarenas Ferry Schedule.
Local outfitters offer 2-5 day kayaking excursions along deserted beaches. Costs vary but you'll be in the ball park if you plan about $600 for four days/three nights. And some outfitters will even pick you up at the airport when you arrive.
You can even visit and explore Isla de Tortugas.
Kayak, enjoy some Costa Rica fishing, swim, and snorkel during the day and enjoy quiet tropical nights far from the madding crowd.
The thing to keep in mind is that your kayaking adventure is limited only by your imagination.
Come alone.
Bring your partner. And kids.
Explore the mangroves, rivers, coastline.
Paddle a couple of hours or explore for a few days.
Look for multi-adventure packages like horseback riding, whitewater rafting, canopy tours, snorkeling----and any number of other options.
And remember what Nike taught you.
Just do it!
