POAS VOLCANO
Poas Volcano is the one of the most widely visited of Costa Rica's 112 volcanoes. Only about 23 miles from San Jose, it is one of the few active volcanos (yep, you can spell this word two ways!) in the world that has a road virtually to its summit. Since 1878, it has erupted 39 times and visitors frequently see 600' tall geysers coming from its main sulfuric-filled crater which, incidentally, is considered the second largest in the world. It is a mile across and 1000 feet deep! When you are on your Costa Rica vacation, will you see the geysers?
Can't tell you but I can say this: on Christmas Day 2009, some folks taking Costa Rica vacations had the experience of a lifetime when it shot a column of vapor, water, rocks, and sediment nearly 2,000 feet high! That Costa Rica trip up the mountain will never be forgotten. The very best way of going to this volcano is by car so you can stop along the way. As you climb the slopes of the volcano the lush surroundings will astound you. Manicured coffee farms give way to fern farms, then strawberry farms (and lots of fruit stands where people sample the fruit before buying), and finally pastures. You will definitely notice a chilly change in temperature as you climb. There are also lots of tours to the volcano but most of them don’t reach the rim until late morning, after the fog has rolled in.

This volcano is in the cloud forest and you can expect the clouds and fog to roll in by mid-morning so get started early—and don’t forget your jacket.Part of Poas National Park, you’ll park about half a mile from the crater. The walk is very easy but expect lots of Ticos (and radios) on weekends. I recommend going during the week. After all, this is YOUR Costa Rica vacation adventure.
Bring your own picnic lunch to this place or you’ll be mighty hungry when you finish your hike. You can, of course, pick up some very, very fresh produce (and cheese) at one of the roadside stands as you head up, but there is not a lot of variety within the small park center itself. This volcano is home to several dozen species of birds and some mammals, the most famous being the green-yellow squirrel, found only here in the world. In addition to the huge crater, there’s a second called Botos Lagoon which contains fresh water from a river. There are signs to this lagoon so you can’t get lost. When you travel Costa Rica, if Poas volcano is part of your plan for the day, consider visiting La Paz Waterfall Gardens as well. You’ll find the world’s largest butterfly garden, a hummingbird garden, a wildlife exhibit, and several waterfalls, including La Paz Waterfall. Considered a must-see by many, the restaurant has magnificent views.
And, when planning your Costa Rica vacation, remember that the best time to visit the Waterfall Gardens is mid-week. But, by all means, be sure that, when you travel Costa Rica, you take a day trip out of San Jose to Poas Volcano. And, if you have time, also try to visit famous
Arenal Volcano, click.
It’s a beautiful trip and maybe you’ll get to see the geyser’s dance! After all, the Old Lady has been dancing for 11,000,000 years. Maybe she'll dance for you on your Costa Rica vacation. Pura Vida!
