COSTA RICA TRAVEL BY TRAIN

Want a real treat during your Costa Rica travel?

Take the train to the Pacific beach!

Once upon a time, trains crossed Costa Rica from the Pacific to the Caribbean.

There was even a famous “jungle train” from San Jose to Puerto Limon on the Caribbean that some travelers still believe to be in operation.

Alas, it’s long gone.

But. . . just a few years ago, a passenger route was reopened from San Jose to Mata de Limon in Caldera, just south of Puntarenas on the Pacific Coast.

During the high tourist season, the train runs every weekend and more sporadically during off season.

If you want a really fun weekend, plan to take this 73 mile, four hour ride.

Don’t expect a gentle ride but be sure to take your camera for an authentic, and sometimes visually spectacular, experience.

You’ll cross rivers and canyons on high bridges and pass through rural areas of the country that you’re not likely to see by car---and certainly not by bus.

You’re not going to be alone. The train (some of the cars are 80 years old!) will be alive with Tico families and music.

Along the way, there’ll be brief stops at a number of small towns where townspeople will come aboard to sell “gallos” (tortillas), play guitars and harmonicas and invite passengers to dance.

Fiesta! Fiesta!

How much does it cost? The price for a round-trip ticket is about $16.00 per person (but check the current price when making costa rica travel reservations by train (INCOFER or American Travel (506) 22-33-33-00).

Like this Costa Rica beach? It’s where you’re headed. So, don't forget your bathing suit and suntan lotion.

Sure, a car rental is great for getting around.

But take the time to travel Costa Rica by train, too.

Welcome aboard.
