GETTING AROUND BY AIR AND FERRY

Maybe you’ve more time than this fellow but want to get to a remote surfing beach quickly. How to do it? Air, of course.

Perhaps you just like flying over gorgeous mountains.

Or, there’s a medical or family emergency.

Two things to consider. First, if you have oversized cargo like a surfboard, ask if there are size restrictions and ensure your board will be with you. Some surfers have reported that their boards were left behind at the last moment because other cargo was taken instead.

Second, during Costa Rica’s high season (December through April), space is at a premium so it’s a good idea to reserve your flight in advance.

Costa Rica Travel by Ferry

It’s dirt cheap, a couple of bucks for you (and about $10 more if you take a car). Not a lot of luxury and only snacks, but Hey! What do you expect for $2.00?

No car? No problem. You’ll have a bus waiting to take you to your Costa Rica travel destinations on the Nicoya Peninsula.

DON'T WAIT TO GET TO THE FERRY UNTIL THE LAST MOMENT. YOU MAY FIND A VERY, VERY LONG LINE BECAUSE FERRIES DO NOT TAKE RESERVATIONS.

AND. . .REMEMBER THAT EASTER WEEK (SANTA SEMANA) AND CHRISTMAS WEEK (NAVIDAD) ARE THE TWO MOST POPULAR VACATION WEEKS FOR TICOS (NOT TO MENTION ALL THE GRINGO VACATIONERS).

So, put a little planning into this portion of your travel Costa Rica plans.

Or, perhaps you’d like to see the Osa Peninsula in southern Costa Rica. Great, nearly deserted beaches, one of the last remaining remote areas in the country. Lots of wildlife.

Fortunately, it’s easily reached by a ferry from Golfito.

Golfito is on the extreme southwestern coast of Costa Rica, just a short ways from Panama.

Travel time from San Jose is a good eight hours so I suggest considering a bus charter (you'll need to stay overnight and the charter company will take you to a hotel). It’s cheap and comfortable.

The ferry leaves Golfito at 11:30 a.m. and 90 minutes later you’ll find yourself in Puerto Jimenez on the Osa Peninsula.

When you’re ready to return, take the 6:00 a.m. ferry from Puerto Jimenez to Golfito. It’s very cheap—--about $2.00 (that's about 1000 colones)—--but it doesn’t take cars.
