COSTA RICA TRAVEL

GETTING AROUND BY AIR AND FERRY

costa-rica-travel_zipline See the fellow I met ziplining on his Costa Rica travel? He’s a very busy man and had flown in for a 3(!) day vacation from New Jersey. So little time yet. . . here he is high above the canopy at Arenal. How’d he do it? Air charter.

Maybe you’ve more time than this fellow but want to get to a remote surfing beach quickly. How to do it? Air, of course.

Perhaps you just like flying over gorgeous mountains.

Or, there’s a medical or family emergency.

Costa Rica Travel by Air Charter

You’ve got air charter choices. I collected them for you.

Most charter carriers fly out of SAN JOSE: Juan Santamaria Airport (San Jose International Airport) or Tobias Bollanos Airport (Pavas Airport).

One charter carrier, Macaw Air, flies out of LIBERIA: Daniel Oduber Airport (Liberia International Airport).

Aero Bell: Tel. 22-90-00-00 Pavas Airport

Aerofast Airlines: Tel. 22-96-02-31 Pavas Airport

Aviones Taxi Aereo: Tel. 24-41-16-26, 24-41-20-62 Juan Santamaria Airport

Macaw Air: Tel. 23-64-12-23, Daniel Oduber Airport (LIBERIA)

Nature Air: Tel. Tel. 22-90-07-98, 1-877-767-2672 Pavas Airport

Paradise Air: Tel. 22-96-36-00, 22-31-09-38 Pavas Airport

Sansa Airlines: Tel. 22-23-41-79, 1-877-767-2672 Juan Santamaria

Taxi Aereo Centroamericano: 22-32-13-17, 22-32-14-38 Pavas

Taxi Aereo Costa Sol: Tel. 24-40-14-44 Juan Santamaria

Two things to consider. First, if you have oversized cargo like a surfboard, ask if there are size restrictions and ensure your board will be with you. Some surfers have reported that their boards were left behind at the last moment because other cargo was taken instead.

Second, during Costa Rica’s high season (December through April), space is at a premium so it’s a good idea to reserve your flight in advance.

Costa Rica Travel by Ferry

costa-rica-travel_ferry

If your Costa Rica travel plans include visiting the marvelous Nicoya Peninsula for its fabulous beaches and adventures, consider taking a beautiful 90 minute tropical open-air ferry from Puntarenas (easily reached by bus, car, or plane).

It’s dirt cheap, a couple of bucks for you (and about $10 more if you take a car). Not a lot of luxury and only snacks, but Hey! What do you expect for $2.00?

No car? No problem. You’ll have a bus waiting to take you to your Costa Rica travel destinations on the Nicoya Peninsula.

DON'T WAIT TO GET TO THE FERRY UNTIL THE LAST MOMENT. YOU MAY FIND A VERY, VERY LONG LINE BECAUSE FERRIES DO NOT TAKE RESERVATIONS.

AND. . .REMEMBER THAT EASTER WEEK (SANTA SEMANA) AND CHRISTMAS WEEK (NAVIDAD) ARE THE TWO MOST POPULAR VACATION WEEKS FOR TICOS (NOT TO MENTION ALL THE GRINGO VACATIONERS).

So, put a little planning into this portion of your travel Costa Rica plans.

Or, perhaps you’d like to see the Osa Peninsula in southern Costa Rica. Great, nearly deserted beaches, one of the last remaining remote areas in the country. Lots of wildlife.

Don't know where the Osa is? Find it on this Costa Rica map, click

Fortunately, it’s easily reached by a ferry from Golfito.

Golfito is on the extreme southwestern coast of Costa Rica, just a short ways from Panama.

Travel time from San Jose is a good eight hours so I suggest considering a bus charter (you'll need to stay overnight and the charter company will take you to a hotel). It’s cheap and comfortable.

Want to find Costa Rica bus schedules? Click

The ferry leaves Golfito at 11:30 a.m. and 90 minutes later you’ll find yourself in Puerto Jimenez on the Osa Peninsula.

When you’re ready to return, take the 6:00 a.m. ferry from Puerto Jimenez to Golfito. It’s very cheap—--about $2.00 (that's about 1000 colones)—--but it doesn’t take cars.
