COSTA RICA SURFING (AND MORE)

MANUEL ANTONIO TO MATAPALO

By all means, try Costa Rica surfing at Manuel Antonio National Park on your Costa Rica vacation. This is a must-see place, voted by the people of Costa Rica as one of that country's Seven Wonders.

If you're not familiar with the Costa Rica Seven Wonders, click here

This national park is located on the central Pacific Coast south of Jaco, one of Costa Rica's most popular surfing cities. It is also one of the country's favorite party towns and many Costa Rica vacations begin and end there. For many surfers, Jaco is the place to go, click here

You'll find it to be one of the most popular Costa Rica vacation spots in all of the country and pretty upscale. If you're on a bit of a budget, consider staying in Quepos which is just a little bit north.

Or stay in a nearby Costa Rica hostel. Some of them are actually quite nice, offer private rooms, yet are very inexpensive.

Don't be fooled by the name, many Costa Rica hostels are nice enough for most anyone, click for more

Like to surf? If you're a beginner or intermediate, you'll love Costa Rica surfing in these pristine, clear waters on one ofthe coveted Costa Rica's Blue Flag beaches, click.

At Manuel Antonio, you’ll find beautiful Costa Rica beaches, lots of wildlife, and spectacular weather year-found.

The best surfing is from May to November.

A side-note. Be very careful with your things on the beach. Monkeys are very common and for some reason love to steal from vacationers.

There's Way More to Do Besides Surfing

costa-rica-surfing_canopy Though the surfing is great here, I can't leave Manuel Antonio National Park without telling you a little teeny bit more about it.

If you get tired of Costa Rica surfing, you’ll find a few other things to do around Manuel Antonio (in fact, all along the coast here).

You can swim.

Walk the beaches and smell the salt air.

Or. . .do these things (and more) • Fishing (about 40 different types) • Horseback Riding • ATV Tours • Mangrove Wildlife Tours • Spa Treatments • Vanilla Spice Tours • Tours of Park and Surrounding Areas • Butterfly/Reptile Gardens • Learn Spanish • Surfing Classes • Scuba Diving • Canopy Zipline Tours • Whitewater Rafting • Mountain Biking • Kayaking Trips • Jet Ski Tours • Snorkel & Dolphin Watch • Ultralight Flights • Parasailing Excursions • Crocodile Watching (no feeding!) • Birdwatching

And, one more thing: bring your smile.

You'll use it a lot.

This will be one Costa Rica vacation that you will long remember.

On The Road to Matapalo

By now it'll probably not surprise you to learn that there are a number of good surfing spots around Manuel Antonio.

Some can be difficult to reach so you’ll have little company.

Try Playitas on the north end of Manuel Antonio.

Or go to Mary Sombras for a large swell and left and right tubular waves.

here. Located near Quepos on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, the beaches of Manuel Antonio National Park attract visitors year-round. Info about the ranger station, hiking trail map and driving directions.

costa-rica-surfing_manuel-antonio And, if you like Playa Hermosa (just south of Jaco), you’ll also enjoy Playa Bajo and Playa del Rey. Good surfing, sometimes by river mouths.

Just remember that anytime you’re close to a river mouth in this neck of the woods, you’ll have crocodiles as neighbors.

You’ve been warned!

Want an endless beach? A virtually deserted, endless beach?

There’s one at Playa Matapalo 10 or 12 miles south of Manuel Antonio. You won’t find good swimming here because of the surf and sometimes strong riptides but if you like really good Costa Rica surfing and boogie boarding with lots of peace, quiet, and decent access, this is the place for you.

Finally, I want to mention that as you travel Costa Rica along this coast, you'll be swept away by its really rugged, green, lush beauty.

Mile-after-mile, the mountains nearly come down to the beach along much of this stunning coast. You'll have great Costa Rica surfing, great adventures, great days and stunning sunsets.

Pura Vida!
