Surf the Caribbean!
The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is still largely undeveloped but it contains several terrific Costa Rica surfing beaches, including the very famous Salsa Brava wave at Puerto Viejo. Some of the most spectacular waves occur on this coast. You can surf year-round here but the best water is considered to be between December and April. If you want laid-back surfing and mile-after-mile of really spectacular uncrowded beaches with lots of different outdoor activities to choose from, this is the place for you.
Though it’s only about four hours east of San Jose, it’s still largely undiscovered. Better yet, the best surfing beaches are easily accessible from paved roads all along the way. Your starting point is Limon, then south. Great surfing. Miles of beaches. Black-sand beaches. White-sand beaches. Coral reefs. Sunken ships to explore. Miles of adventure during the day. At night you’ll have your choice of quiet solitude or playing at Puerto Viejo, the party city of Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. Whether it's discos, funky hangouts, or international restaurants, you'll find them here. But be warned. Between December and April, some of the world’s best surfers descend upon Puerto Viejo to take on the mighty Salsa Brava. Every night will be a party night but finding a place to stay can be a real challenge.
