COSTA RICA SCUBA DIVING

With two oceans from which to choose, Costa Rica scuba diving is often extraordinary.

See the scuba diver with the little Whale Shark in our slideshow?

Little? Yep.

The big boys get to be 40'. Even the average one is 30' long.

Imagine swimming along with one of these guys.

It'd be a Costa Rica vacation adventure of a lifetime.

And, since anything is possible on your Costa Rica vacation, if you are a scuba diver you can--should--must---spend some time whale shark diving

Or imagine swimming with hundreds---I mean hundreds--of hammerhead sharks.

And giant rays in great columns.

Schools of thousands of fish.

On your trip to Costa Rica, you'll find lots of places to dive---even if you're a beginner---but here are some of the BEST places.

Incomparable Cocos Island

At the top of the list of Costa Rica diving is Cocos Island.

Think you never heard of it?

You have. It's the setting for "Jurassic Park" (remember the Costa Rica island with the dinosaurs?).

And some think the setting for Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island."

Jacques Cousteau considered it the most beautiful island in the world.

And, it's been voted as one of Costa Rica's Seven Wonders, click

It's also being considered by the World Heritage as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the planet.

Real pirates buried real treasure on this island.

It's one of the top 10 dive destinations in the entire world.

It's the NUMBER 1 dive destination for big animal diving.

And, sharks from around the world travel to it, giving it the name "Shark Island."

The Jewel is Under Attack

Unfortunately, the waters around Cocos Island are under attack by modern technology and good old-fashioned barbarity.

For soup.

Costa Rica deserves better.

Costa Rica's largest Pacific coral reef is home to a myriad collection of spectacularly colored fish and invertebrates. It's located at Cano Island Biological Preserve and you'll discover 18 different varieties of coral when you snorkel or dive---not to mention sharks, whales, turtles, rays, barracudas, and lots more.

Check out the best Costa Rica scuba diving locations around Canos Island. and you'll see what I'm talking about. But, there's another treat in store here because huge numbers of deep ocean fish also congregate here along with whales, porpoises, and sea turtles.

There are few places in the world with such a grand show!

Maybe it's the best all-around Costa Rica scuba diving experience for you, click to see why.

Diver's Insurance

If you're thinking of scuba diving in Costa Rica, consider getting diver's insurance before you leave for your Costa Rica vacation.

The Diver's Alert Network, a nonprofit medical and research facility for divers associated with Duke University Medical Center provides insurance and has staff working 365 days a year.

I want you to have fun. . .but I also want to remind you that accidents can happen and it's better to be safe than sorry.

Click to find more information about scuba diving insurance.

And, equally importantly, find out whether your scuba diving operator has insurance.

Consider using a PADI certified dive operator---one that has insurance.

Accidents do happen so a little due diligence up front is a good idea before diving.
