COSTA RICA HOSTELS MAL PAIS

I have cautioned on other Costa Rica hostels pages that some do not accept credit cards (not to mention giving some great tips). If you missed those pages head back to the Costa Rica Hostels main page (link is towards the bottom).

Getting There and More

Mal Pais/Santa Teresa sit on the southern Pacific coast of the Nicoya Peninsula.

Typically, people drive or take a bus to Puntarenas, then take a short (very inexpensive) ferry ride across to the peninsula, then drive or take a bus or cab to Mal Pais/Santa Teresa.

If you are on a budget (after all, you are reading about hostels and cheap Costa Rica hotels), I strongly recommend taking a bus. They are cheap (about $5.00 from San Jose), comfortable, and normally pretty fast. To help you, here are Costa Rica bus schedules, click

Once you get to Puntarenas, you'll need to take a ferry. It is very cheap ($1.50/person; $12.00/car) to get across to the Nicoya Peninsula (you will have to get to Mal Pais, however). Here is the Puntarenas/Nicoya Peninsula ferry schedule (but note that the ferries now run about every hour)

Alternatively, you can drive or take a bus directly to Santa Teresa. The road is good from the ferry terminal to about 3 miles outside of Santa Teresa where it becomes dirty and bumpy (but worth it!).

Mal Pais/Santa Teresa is a perfect place for surfers to take a Costa Rica vacation because it is simply a spectacular, great beach awarded the coveted "Blue Flag" certificate for its outstanding quality, click for more

Mal Pais has ideal waves for beginners and expert surfers and there are surf shops and lessons available.

You'll also find plenty of other water sports like fishing, scuba diving, kite surfing, and snorkeling.

Or go horseback riding, take a canopy tour, try mountain or quad bikes, birdwatch, or hike nearby trails.
