Costa Rica Birds: Tiny Hummingbirds

There are nearly 900 kinds of Costa Rica birds, including 51 species of hummingbirds.

One of them flitted past the morning I wrote this page as a flock of little parrots squawked while leaving their roosts in the nearby orange-blooming Vermilion (Poro) trees.

And, of course, the weather was well. . .

spectacular.

It always is (check it out for yourself). That little hummingbird inspired me to write this page. Life's little marvels should be shared, don't you think?

Costa Rica has an astounding 500,000 kinds of plants and animals, including an extraordinary array of hummingbirds. You would have to travel throughout the entire continental U.S. and Canada to find as many different types of birds as Costa Rica has.

FACTOID: Each Costa Rica hummingbird species feeds on certain flowers and has developed a specialized beak having the exact length and curvature of the specific flowers it feeds upon.

Birding is simply extraordinary here and birdwatching has become a very popular part of Costa Rica vacations.

You'll find hummingbirds almost everywhere. Just check out the spectacular flowers and blooming trees.

If you like birds or photography, be sure your Costa Rica vacation includes a bit of birdwatching or photography (be sure to bring a telefoto lens) and, of course, you'll be able to find guided tours if that's your preference.

Pura Vida!
