When many people think of Puerto Viejo they think of Costa Rica surfing. It's legendary among surfers and a favorite trip to Costa Rica. Between November through April, the little town is filled with surfers. The best-of-the-best head for the world-famous three-mile long La Salsa Brava wave while beginners and intermediates can have lots of fun surfing at Playa Cocles.

But don’t stop at Puerto Viejo if you want really long, really breathtaking Costa Rica beaches: some white, others coral or even gray.
Where you'll sometimes be alone.
La Amistad International Park
Well, not exactly alone. You'll be on the Caribbean section of La Amistad International Park, nearly 500,000 acres of wildlife-filled wilderness, formed by two countries--Costa Rica and Panama--and extending from the Atlantic Caribbean nearly to the Pacific coasts.

Head south along the paved road that'll take you to Punta Cocles and Punta Uva and end at Manzanillo. Along the way you'll find many magnificent beaches like

These are tiny places but, in addition to the fabulous beaches, you’ll find

, hiking, birding (about 400 species), turtle-watching, kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, and horseback riding. You can even look for the very rare fresh-water Tuxuci porpoise whose existence was not even known (except to local fishermen) until the mid ‘90s. And, don’t forget to visit the Gandoca-Manzanillo Refuge for a spectacular five mile long beach where four species of sea turtle nest and where there's a coral reef about 500 feet off shore. Fellow traveler, you’re at the end of the road here (next stop, Panama) but, as you look out over the azure Caribbean, think of Christopher Columbus.
