COSTA RICA BEACHES
FABULOUS PLAYA FLAMINGO
My yacht docks at one of the most magnificent Costa Rica beaches, Playa Flamingo. As I sail the Seven Seas, I always end with a trip to Costa Rica and this magical beach. OK, truth is I don’t have a yacht but when my ship comes in I’ll dock alongside yours at this Costa Rica beach. Then, we’ll play a little golf at a Robert Trent Jones, Jr. championship golf course and hob-nob with rich Ticos and wealthy mariners from around the world. What’s that you say? When you travel Costa Rica, you don’t want to play golf with me? And you’d rather hob-nob with a fellow traveler who already has a yacht? OK, OK, Mr. or Ms. Snobby, I get the picture. But you still want to know about the beaches around Playa Flamingo? The fabulous Costa Rica beaches?

Fine. Let’s talk about them. To begin with, keep in mind that as you travel Costa Rica there are several great beaches very close to one another here with Playa Flamingo sort of in the middle. If you don’t want to come by yacht, no worries. Fly into Liberia International and drive or take a taxi. It’s about 45 miles away. Or fly into San Jose, rent a car or take a bus (very convenient and very cheap). You can even find a tour operator to take you there.

Playa Flamingo (also known as Playa Flamingo Blanco) is really misnamed. There are no flamingos, though the story goes that there used to be. Maybe, I don’t know. In any event, you’ll probably call it Playa Pampered. Folks with VERY BIG BOATS dock at the largest marina between Acapulco and Panama. How big? Well, let’s just say that there’s room for 80 yachts larger than the Pinta that crossed the Atlantic and discovered the New World. And, guess what? These folks didn’t come all this way by boat to rough-it. Nope. They want to be pampered---and have a really good time on their Costa Rica vacations. You can have the same good time. . .and be pampered. . . .when you visit the Costa Rica beaches along this shore (but if you want to live like the rich and famous be prepared to pay like the rich and famous). What’s there to do? Play a round on the championship course.

You can also hike and go horseback riding if the mood strikes. But, at sunset you'll want to take a very romantic stroll down a spectacular beach. Whatever you choose to enjoy on your Costa Rica trip, expect to find a lavish community of villas, hotels, and luxury resorts on a Blue-Flag beach.

Great Costa Rica beaches. And more.Eight national parks or reserves within 50 miles, including Marino Las Baulas National Park, only eight miles away, and a nesting area for thousands of leatherback, pacific green, and hawksbill turtles. But, back to other Costa Rica beaches you’ll love. . . Just a stone’s throw away from Playa Flamingo you’ll find Playa Conchal, named for its exotic shell beach. Get in the crystal-clear water and snorkel here! You’ll find lots and lots of beautiful fish and sometimes even sting-rays. And, along the shore is the spectacular Garra de Leon Golf Course by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. But, there’s good news-bad news. The good news is that one of the best hotels in all of Costa Rica is on this beach. The bad news is that it’s also very, very pricey. Of course, since your yacht is docked in the marina at Playa Flamingo, you’ve got more money than you know what to do with. So. . .enjoy! For those of us a bit less financially fortunate, we have two choices. First, we can come during the off-season (May-November) and get great discounts. Or, we can always find nice accommodations at a reasonable price just a 10 minute walk away at Playa Brasilito (or if you start from Flamingo, only a five minute walk). On the other side of Playa Flamingo, take a walk (can you spare five minutes from your busy schedule?) to Playa Portero. Laid-back takes on a whole new meaning here. A great beach and not nearly as crowded as the chic Playa Brasilito or Playa Flamingo. If you want to be boated to the great surfing beaches like world-famous Witches Rock, hire a Tico in the local fishing village to take you there in the morning and pick you up in late after for a night of lavish partying at these fabulous Costa Rica beaches. Pura Vida!
