COSTA RICA BEACHES
CARIBBEAN COSTA RICA PLAYA: CAHUITA
If you want to enjoy spectacular uncrowded Costa Rica beaches on the Caribbean, head to the tiny, laid-back town of Cahuita, about 25 miles south of Limon.
You’ll find over seven miles of beach, shaded by palm trees backing onto lush forests, marshes, and mangroves. You can enjoy a black-sand beach or if you fancy a golden-sand beach, it's here, too.On your Costa Rica vacation, you'll find two distinctive Costa Rica beaches at Cahuita. North of town is Playa Negra, a black-sand beach several miles long. There's also the famous Playa Blanca with its golden-sand beach. Both of these beaches have won Bandera Azul international awards for their environmental quality. If you want pristine, here you go! During your trip to Costa Rica, you'll find none finer. There are some areas where rip tides can be encountered. It's a good idea to ask the rangers or locals where it’s best to swim. Lots of people find that one of the better areas for swimming is around the mouth of the Rio Perezoso.
But you won’t be alone here on your Costa Rica vacation. There are anteaters (that live in trees!), coatamundis, raccoons, sloths, armadillos, iguanas and troops of howler and capuchin monkeys that like the beach as well. Not to mention parrots, macaws (best time December-February), toucans, and lots of other varieties. Great beaches, wildlife, and tropical weather make memorable Costa Rica vacations here.
La Amistad International Park
Cahuita is in the Caribbean section of La Amistad International Park (there's a Central region section as well), a nearly 500,000 acre wilderness from Costa Rica to Panama and the Atlantic Caribbean almost to the Pacific Ocean!Hundreds of species of birds, five different kinds of wild cats, including the mighty jaguar and puma.

And butterflies.Lots of butterflies. Costa Rica has more kinds of butterflies than the entire African continent (bet you didn't know that) and many are right here. Bring your binoculars and camera! You'll also find coral reefs (you can rent equipment) with many different kinds of corals, from massive brain corals to delicate sea feathers, elkhorn corals to soft flowering corals. Plus about 500 species of fish! If you've ever wanted to see an old shipwreck, come here. You can snorkel around not one, but two of them—-complete with cannons! The reef is part of Cahuita National Park and it’s a good idea to ask the rangers where it is best and safest to snorkel. Much of the beach is normally very calm because of the reefs but as you head down the beach you’ll find giant waves crashing down and perhaps huge sea turtles. Three species lay eggs on these beaches. If you like some of the most spectacular, uncrowded Costa Rica beaches, abundant wildlife (including the rare freshwater Tucuxi porpoise) snorkeling with hundreds of species of fish, and just being-laid back. . .this is the place for you! Pura Vida!
